CANE: The Clearinghouse on Abuse and Neglect of the Elderly

The Clearinghouse on Abuse and Neglect of the Elderly (CANE) is the nation’s largest database dedicated solely to elder abuse literature. Established in 1986, the database has grown to include almost 8,000 references pertaining to many aspects of elder abuse and neglect, and the conditions that impact elder mistreatment.

Search CANE to identify citations and brief summaries of peer-reviewed journal articles, online resources, and public awareness materials relating to the abuse, neglect, self-neglect, sexual abuse, and financial exploitation of elders. Related issues, such as ageism, are also featured.

Through CANE, the University of Delaware has been involved for the past twenty-five years in national efforts to raise awareness of elder abuse as a social problem of significant magnitude.

Why Should I Care About Elder Abuse?

In the spring of 2008 the Clearinghouse on Abuse and Neglect of the Elderly (CANE) held its first student art competition asking participants to creatively answer the questions, "Why Should I Care About Elder Abuse?".  Ninety-four Cab Calloway School of the Arts students from Wilmington, DE answered that question.  Educating America's youth on the issue of elder abuse is a critical step to stopping the mistreatment of our country's oldest generation.  For more information on the competition and the awards ceremony featuring Delaware Attorney General, Beau Biden, click here.
